Mrs. Britton’s Class Trip to the Beach

One day in October on a frosty Thursday morning 5th class went on a walk to the beach. We went to the beach because we were doing about coastal features. We saw a cave .We went inside. It was all wet. We saw marram grass, erosion, cliffs and deposition. The boys found a football and brought it back to school. We also saw sea stack and reefs .There were loads of reefs. On the rocks near the diving boards there was a net to keep the rocks from falling. We thanked Mrs Britton and Mrs Stuttard for a lovely trip to the beach.

Science Week 2011

For Science Week we planted bulbs and also did an experiment .The bulbs will hopefully grow and we will put pictures up on the website when they do. The experiment went as follows we planted the first bulb in a pot and put it under a box so it will get no sunlight. We put the second bulb into a jar with just water and sunlight, no soil. We put the third bulb into a pot but we will not water it. We will keep you posted as to what will happen.

Donegal Adventure Centre

This year 5th class is going to The Donegal Adventure Centre for four weeks. On the first week they split us up into two groups called Cowboys and Pirates. We did indoor and outdoor games; we then did an obstacle course. On the second week they split us into two groups again. The strawberries did rock climbing and played some indoor games and the bananas played spoons and sharks and life guards. Last week we did team building games, we had to work together as a group to build a bridge to get everyone across without falling in the mud. Niamh wasn’t that lucky!

5th Class and Junior Infants Work Together

We made a corn on the cob field for Junior Infants scarecrows .We made corn prints with actual corn on the cob. The whole class made one each. When we put on the leaves it looked really good, then we put the corn onto the wall outside Junior Infants classroom with the scarecrows it looked fabulous, it looked like a real cornfield .Junior Infants made the beautiful scarecrows .It took us a long time but it was worth it .The cornfield looked really good on the wall.

Our Self Portaits

We made self-portraits of ourselves in 5th class. Miss Jones took a black and white picture of each of us. Then using black, white and grey paint we painted portraits of ourselves paying particular attention to our features and the position of our eye, ears and nose. As you can see the results were spectacular.

6th Class Thriller Dance

On the day of the Halloween break it was decided that sixth class would perform Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ dance routine. Every second day the whole class went to the school hall to practise and for three weeks we kept to this routine. Leah, Michaela, Casey and Claire taught the dance to the class and everyone enjoyed learning all the moves. Karl and Odhrán showed that they were very good ‘Moon-Walkers’.

On the day of the performance it looked as if the whole school had gone mad – there were ghosts, witches and ghouls everywhere. For our performance a lot of effort was put into the costumes and some people were unrecognisable. Hair was back-combed, sprayed, gelled and powdered, faces were painted, scabs, scars and fake blood were added and clothes were torn and shredded.

When we were in position on the stage, the rest of the classes came into the hall and once the music started we got into character. We had to keep blank expressions on our faces and wide eyes throughout the dance. We had great fun performing and the rest of the school seemed to really enjoy it!

Science Week 2011

As part of Science Week 2011, Sixth Class travelled to Letterkenny on Tuesday15th November to attend a special event called ‘Falconry’ given by Martin Maloney in the Aura Leisure Centre. We were taught all about the different birds of prey found in Ireland from the Golden Eagle to the Barn Owl, their habitats and how humans affect the birds’ survival. The real treat was seeing three different birds of prey – a Harris Hawk Falcon, a long eared owl called Leo and a barn owl called Barney. Some children were even able to hold these amazing birds (on their heads!!!)

Unfortunately not everyone got to hold these amazing birds but the lucky few were Conor Jack, Claire, Natasha, Michaela, Saul and Oisin Mc Gloin. After a quick lunch it was back on the bus and we headed back to the school. We had a really lovely time and it was great to be able to see these birds up close.
